As she stood across the street watching flames engulf the roof of her hotel, Erin Schuette, who was drenched from the rain, tried to hold back tears.
"I was inside when it happened," said Schuette, 26, general manager of the Holiday Inn Express.
"This hotel is my life. It's what I do. ... Everybody's safe. That's the main thing."

The powerful storm that dumped heavy snow clear to the Wood River Valley floor earlier this week sent the unmistakable message that autumn is here.
Too bad the region's deciduous trees haven't received that message.
Up and down the valley and across much of central Idaho, forests that would have normally begun to display their brilliant fall hues of yellows, oranges and reds are instead mostly green or just muted browns.

There's a lot going on around public lands in Blaine County, and a couple times a year, county commissioners ask representatives of the agencies that manage those lands to come in and give them an update.
On Tuesday, Ketchum District Forest Service Ranger Kurt Nelson updated the commissioners on this year's fire season.
Fires have hit only 53 acres in his district, 28 of which were in wilderness areas, where the fires were observed and monitored.

That certainly wasn't the case Saturday as 247 people signed up for the Whidbey Pink Salmon Derby hosted by the Fishin' Club and Ace Hardware in Freeland.
"A lot of work was involved in pulling this together, but we had a great team and we learned ways to make the next derby even more successful," said organizer Kari Gerow.
"We are extremely pleased with the participation and success of our first event."

A veteran firefighter who has spent a decade with the Pekin Fire Department will take over the reigns of the department when Chief Chuck Lauss retires next month.
Deputy Chief Kurt Nelson will be promoted to interim chief on Sept. 19, Pekin City Manager Dennis Kief announced Friday.
Nelson, who has been a firefighter since 1990 and with the Pekin department since 1999, said he plans to maintain the momentum Lauss established during his tenure.

A pasture in Saunders County will be transformed into a country concert festival setting in August.
Cousins Kurt Nelson and Kevin Heldt had heard of a country music festival called Comstock and have both been huge country fans.
They combined those two things to come up with the idea of Sandfly Festival.

On Saturday, July 25 four bands competed for the first place prize which included $100 and the opportunity to perform at Papa's Pizza in Pigeon and on the stage at Laker auditorium.
The event was set to take place on the Pigeon Band Shell stage, but due to the heavy rains Pigeon received, Farmapalooza was moved to Laker High.
"To Be Fed," a freestyle alternative rock band from Marvin took first place with a very energetic performance.
The bands were judged on stage presence, sound and creativity.

Those were the results of Friday night's sprint car action at Ocean Speedway.
The GLR Investment 360 Sprint Car Series completed round nine of 12 and filled the final three guaranteed starting positions for the 49th running of the Johnny Key Memorial race on Aug. 29.
